"...all language about everything is analogical; we think in a series of metaphors. We can explain nothing in terms of itself, but only in terms of other things." (Dorothy Sayers, Mind of the Maker, 1941)

Gauntlet Defined

A gauntlet is a computer that crashes unexpectedly, leading to repair and interim shopping for new computer, which leads to attempted internet connection, which, when connection has failed, is followed by a call to SBC, which offers a diagnosis of need for upgraded dsl software, which precipates a five-business-day-wait (that is a quote), which is then followed by a customer complaint regarding the empty mailbox, which provokes a miraculous intervention by a chagrinned technical support staff to connect implied user to promised high speed internet communication, circumventing the U.S. mail, which, under intranational mail protocol should take no longer than three business days.
Just in case you were wondering.
